Uses Of Wind Energy In India
Donald asks...CONSTRUCTION OF WIND ENERGY FARMS IS ON THE RISE WORLDWIDE. INDIA IS FACING CONTINUOUS ENERGY CRISIS.? this is my homeworkWINDMILL FARMS ANSWERS: Wind Energy Farms In India :With global oil prices touching 60 a barrel, the time for alternative energy, and in particular wind energy, has come. According to Dr. Anil Kane, chairman of the Indian Wind Energy Association, one of the fastest growing sectors in India is wind energy. At the rate at which new wind energy farms are being set up in India, he says that in less than two years electricity generated from wind will exceed 5,000 MW. Currently, India has an installed capacity from wind energy of 3,595 MW of which 61 per cent is in Tamil Nadu. Dr. Kane says that Tamil Nadu has a double advantage as it gets wind from the south-west and the north-east. As a result, a 1 MW machine in Tamil Nadu can generate 35-lakh units a year as compared to 20-lakh units in a State like Maharashtra, which stands second in India for wind energy generation. Cost recoveryAlthough the initial costs of wind energy are high, working out to Rs. 4.5 crores to 5 crores per MW, Dr. Kane says that the costs can be recovered in 10 years as 90 per cent of the cost of generation is the cost of financing. And over the next 10 years, the only costs are operating and maintenance costs, thereby reducing the cost of energy per unit to a mere 40 paise. On an average, the machines will last at least 20 years, he says. The Government, Dr. Kane suggests, can play an important role in pushing for such alternative energy sources not by providing cash subsidies but other kinds of incentives. For instance, in Tamil Nadu, wind energy received a boost last year when the Union Ministry of Textiles agreed to include wind farms in its Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS) that gives a subsidy of five per cent in the rate of interest on the borrowed capital for upgrading textile mills. As a result, several textile mills in the State set up wind energy farms. Although wind farms have now been removed from the eligible list of TUFS, Dr. Kane hopes to persuade the Government to reverse its decision. Some other industries that have successfully used wind energy include Bajaj Auto in Pune that has set up a Rs. 300-crore wind energy farm in Satara, which enables it to write off its entire energy bill. Other major users of wind power are the Ramco Group in Tamil Nadu and Alembic Chemicals and Guardian Glass in Gujarat. In the face of the growing threat of global warming, Dr. Kane says India needs to take urgent steps to move away from fossil fuels. He believes that the potential for wind energy is far in excess of the 45,000 MW projected by the Centre for Wind Energy Technology. This figure was arrived at after one of the largest mapping programmes in the world where 500 to 600 meteorological masts were set up around the country. The Indian Wind Energy Association estimates that the potential generation is at least 100,000 MW. Several European countries have made the use of renewable energy compulsory. Dr. Kane says that India too is thinking of creating Renewable Portfolio Standards that would require energy utilities to buy at least five per cent of their total energy from renewable sources. Maharashtra, Karnataka have set a target for renewables. At the end of 2006 India had 6270 MW of wind generating capacity and is the fourth largest market in the world. There are about a dozen wind pumps of various designs providing water for agriculture, afforestation, and domestic purposes, all scattered over the country. The states of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat lead in the field of wind energy. Maria asks...SOLAR ENERGY IS BECOMING POPULAR IN RURAL AND REMOTE AREA IN INDIA. WHY?WINDMILL FARMS ANSWERS: Its free energy Let me start off by saying we (my family and I) live completely, 100% "off of the grid and are completely self sufficient" The house is built utilizing natures natural elements, in the shape of an octagon with 8ft wide arch doors on every wall to catch every angle of wind (typical 4 sided homes have half the chance as one with 8 sides. A circle being the most efficient design). Woodburning stoves, solar chimney, solar AC, solar heating, solar water heating (pool and home), solar stove, solar power, wind power, hydrogen powered back up generator, hydrogen back up water heater, hydrogen stove, 2 hydrogen powered trucks, 1 EV (electric vehicle) and satellite internet. There are no utility lines, no water lines, no roads, tv, cell service, etc. On our ranch. EVERYTHING needed is produced here. All electricity comes from 27 solar panels, 2 main wind gens and a back hydrogen generator if needed (typically we can last 9 days with all luxuries of sunless windless weather, hasn't happened yet). Water is caught and storaged from the rain. Hot water is made with solar batch water heaters with an on-demand hydrogen hot water heater as backup. Even our vehicles use alternative energy (2 hydrogen trucks, 1 EV electric vehicle converted). Because of this we have no bills, no debt and no mortgage. The fallowing steps were taking directly out of a DIY guide I offer to those who would like to run their homes on solar power safely, reducing their monthly utility bills or even selling power back the the electrical companies. The entire guide is available at www agua-luna com. Its pretty simple but if you have any problems feel free to contact me directly I can walk you threw the process. Materials you will needA sheet of copper flashing from the hardware store. This normally costs about 5.00 per square foot. We will need about half a square foot. Two alligator clip leads.A sensitive micro-ammeter that can read currents between 10 and 50 microamperes. Radio Shack sells small LCD multimeters that will do, but I used a small surplus meter with a needle. An electric stove. My kitchen stove is gas, so I bought a small one-burner electric hotplate for about 25. The little 700 watt burners probably won't work -- mine is 1100 watts, so the burner gets red hot.A large clear plastic bottle off of which you can cut the top. I used a 2 liter spring water bottle. A large mouth glass jar will also work.Table salt. We will want a couple tablespoons of salt.Tap water.Sand paper or a wire brush on an electric drill.Sheet metal shears for cutting the copper sheet. The first step is to cut a piece of the copper sheeting that is about the size of the burner on the stove. Wash your hands so they don't have any grease or oil on them. Then wash the copper sheet with soap or cleanser to get any oil or grease off of it. Use the sandpaper or wire brush to thoroughly clean the copper sheeting, so that any sulphide or other light corrosion is removed.Next, place the cleaned and dried copper sheet on the burner and turn the burner to its highest setting. As the copper starts to heat up, you will see beautiful oxidation patterns begin to form. Oranges, purples, and reds will cover the copper. As the copper gets hotter, the colors are replaced with a black coating of cupric oxide. This is not the oxide we want, but it will flake off later, showing the reds, oranges, pinks, and purples of the cuprous oxide layer underneath. The last bits of color disappear as the burner starts to glow red. When the burner is glowing red-hot, the sheet of copper will be coated with a black cupric oxide coat. Let it cook for a half an hour, so the black coating will be thick. This is important, since a thick coating will flake off nicely, while a thin coat will stay stuck to the copper. After the half hour of cooking, turn off the burner. Leave the hot copper on the burner to cool slowly. If you cool it too quickly, the black oxide will stay stuck to the copper. As the copper cools, it shrinks. The black cupric oxide also shrinks. But they shrink at different rates, which makes the black cupric oxide flake off.The little black flakes pop off the copper with enough force to make them fly a few inches. This means a little more cleaning effort around the stove, but it is fun to watch. When the copper has cooled to room temperature (this takes about 20 minutes), most of the black oxide will be gone. A light scrubbing with your hands under running water will remove most of the small bits. Resist the temptation to remove all of the black spots by hard scrubbing or by flexing the soft copper. This might damage the delicate red cuprous oxide layer we need to make to solar cell work.Cut another sheet of copper about the same size as the first one. Bend both pieces gently, so they will fit into the plastic bottle or jar without touching one another. The cuprous oxide coating that was facing up on the burner is usually the best side to face outwards in the jar, because it has the smoothest, cleanest surface.Attach the two alligator clip leads, one to the new copper plate, and one to the cuprous oxide coated plate. Connect the lead from the clean copper plate to the positive terminal of the meter. Connect the lead from the cuprous oxide plate to the negative terminal of the meter. Now mix a couple tablespoons of salt into some hot tap water. Stir the saltwater until all the salt is dissolved. Then carefully pour the saltwater into the jar, being careful not to get the clip leads wet. The saltwater should not completely cover the plates -- you should leave about an inch of plate above the water, so you can move the solar cell around without getting the clip leads wet.Now place in the sun with the magnefied on top.The solar cell is a battery, even in the dark, and will usually show a few microamps of current. That's it it's that simple. Lizzie asks...FACING CRITICAL POWER SHORTAGE, WHY INDIA IS NOT SETTING UP SOLAR PANELS TO MEET CURRENT ENERGY REQUIREMENTS? Why is INDIA always lagging behind when it comes to implementing techs especially INENERGY sector?WINDMILL FARMS ANSWERS: As far as I know India is installing solar and wind at a fast pace, but the corporate media in the USA no longer reports news, only sensational stories and problems. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia National Solar Mission in India India is densely populated and has high solar insolation, an ideal combination for using solar power in India. India is already a leader in wind power generation. In the solar energy sector, some large projects have been proposed, and a 35,000 km2 area of the Thar Desert has been set aside for solar power projects, sufficient to generate 700 GW to 2,100 GW. In July 2009, India unveiled a US19 billion plan to produce 20 GW of solar power by 2020. Under the plan, the use of solar-powered equipment and applications would be made compulsory in all government buildings, as well as hospitals and hotels. On 18 November 2009, it was reported that India was ready to launch its National Solar Mission under the National Action Plan on Climate Change, with plans to generate 1,000 MW of power by 2013. According to a 2011 report by GTM Research and Bridge, India is facing a perfect storm of factors that will drive solar photovoltaic (PV) adoption at a "furious pace over the next five years and beyond". The falling prices of PV panels, mostly from China but also from the U.S., has coincided with the growing cost of grid power in India. Government support and ample solar resources have also helped to increase solar adoption, but perhaps the biggest factor has been need. India, "as a growing economy with a surging middle class, is now facing a severe electricity deficit that often runs between 10 and 13 percent of daily need". On another note, the USA and Europe and China are also installing wind and solar like mad. Europe will be free of fossil fuels in a decade, China not far behind, and unless the Republican succeed in derailing it, the US will catch them both. John asks...WIND ENERGY ESSAY HELP? well i need to type up 250 words and email it to my teacher tonight and it cant be copied OF websites its plagiarism and i haven't had sleep IN 4 days and feel like shit so if any OF you could throw IN a few points it would be greatly appreciatedWINDMILL FARMS ANSWERS: Hi. JoeI would help you from my company, St. Joseph's Research Center, India. In the third millenium, there is excessive pollution in the cities due to emission from vehicles, from industries using fossil fuels, and from petroleum products that are burned. These emissions include carbon monoxide, which harms the blood of people who inhale it, and causes headache, weakness, etc. In China, the problem is so bad that people breathe pure oxygen from cylinders kept in places like restaurants, etc. So that the people can recover at the end of the day. With further progress, these problems will increase in countries like China. So what would be the alternative?Other emissions are compounds with sulfur, phophorus, etc. Which come down with rain as acids that destroy or harm plant life.Lead in the air harms the blood, and can cause diseases in the people who breathe it.With all these problems, we look for an alternative, environment friendly alternative source of energy. The answer lies in 1. The traditional hydroelectric turbine power generator at the dams over as many rivers as possible, e.g. The Brahmaputra River for China. This is an issue today for diplomatic war between India and China. We hope, the International community intervenes and helps these countries resolve their worries in a sensible and useful manner. The second, 2. Is the new sources of energy, Solar power, Wind Power, and such systems. Solar power consists of solar water heaters, that provide about 1000 WAtts of energy per square meter of exposed black metal heat collectors from the sun's radiation. The photovoltaic cells, develop the same amount of electrical energy when exposed to visible light from the sun. The wind power generators have large blades that trap the wind and use the power to turn the turbine to generate power in remote areas that do not have access to power lines from hydroelectric generators. When turning enviromental friendly, we must change our lifestyle. Our industries must be made more efficient, and use more electric, solar, or wind power for their operation, rather than fossil fuels. The vehicles must run on electricity from the hydroelectric dams and not on fossil fuels. This means, vehicles must have an electric motor. A power line must feed in power from the hydroelectric dam so that the vehicle can run any distance along the highways. For safe power transfer from the insulated power line along the road to the vehicle, the Tesla system can be used. For those who do not wish to drive a vehicle, especially women and school children who need to go to school, a cab with software control can be used to run along tracks or cables, and take the children to school as programmed. This eliminates the need for drivers and avoids accidents due to human error. A reserve battery must be present, in case of any power failure. According to Standing British Law, any reserve battery power supply unit can have less than one third the power used by the vehicle or industry. This is so that the backup is not used indiscriminately. Wind turbine blade power generators are useful for adding to the existing power supply systems in the mordern world. Since all fuels, (alcohol based, algae based, or fossil fuel based), release carbon dioxide into the air, and since carbon dioxide causes green house effect and global warming resulting of rise in sea water level and drowning of coastal areas where 70% of mankind flourishes, we must stop burning of fuels, and start using electricity for our needs. Wind Energy is a viable answer to this need. And is efficient in the trials until today. The Scandinavian Wind Turbine blade power generators are one of the best in the world. A wind turbine installed between two towers in the Bahamas supplies power needs for the towers and more. The wind between the towers is trapped and focussed into the turbine blade generators. This is an innovative idea for using wind power. Sharon asks...INDIA IS AN EMERGING ECONOMY AND ITS ENERGY NEEDS ARE EXPLODING: HOW CAN IT LOWER DEPENDENCE ON FOSSIL FUELS? Is the answer nuclear, WIND, solar or something else altogether?WINDMILL FARMS ANSWERS: Nuclear is one way of generating the energy that cities need, but it would be insane not to use the natural rescources that wind and solar power can offer, especially for a nation rich in the natural resources of the sun!
